US - Laurie LR3435 (March 1968)
I always had a really soft spot for this fuzz-drenched cover of The Ronettes' classic. Where Phil Spector utilised his Wall Of Sound (TM), this band from Essex went for the afore-mentioned fuzz guitar and a pounding beat which in retrospect seems like a dry run for the glam rock sound which would dominate UK pop a few years later.
My early hearings of this record were limited to oldies shows on the radio like Pick Of The Pops, as despite its top 30 placing a vinyl copy remained frustratingly elusive. Guess I was always looking in the wrong place at the wrong time, and it never seemed to crop up on any of those bargain bin 60's comps either. Having been dependent on a radio-sourced cassette recording for many years, I recently got my hands on a copy and fell for its charms all over again.
Reached no.25 in the UK, but deserved much higher, although a 12 week run is nothing to be sniffed at.
