Outpost 11 (UK 2012, 90 mins, 101 Films)
A war rages on in an alternative past. Three soldiers at a remote outpost find their world turned on its head when a warning light goes off, a cryptic message is received, and surreal events begin to take place.
It's an interesting premise, but there's the nagging feeling this is a short film doubled in duration, without the material to fill the running time. One character's means of relieving the boredom is... well, let's just say it adds nothing to proceedings. Its visual style is absorbing, however, and the production design is pleasing, blending different types of technology in this alternate, steam driven past. Despite dull periods, director Anthony Woodley does build an effectively claustrophobic atmosphere at times, and could be a talent to watch for the future.
Osombie (USA 2012, 90 mins, Signature Entertainment)
Osama Bin Laden is back from the dead as a zombie, and creating a legion of zombie terrorists.
Not as stupidly entertaining as it sounds. It quickly runs out of steam, the army's battles with undead insurgents rapidly become repetitive, and the "Osombie" of the title is hardly in it (just briefly at the start and end), and even then doesn't get much to do. Still, possibly good for the odd cheap giggle if you're drunk and not paying too much attention, and if you do make it to the end you'll be rewarded with possibly the worst CGI'd aircraft you're likely to see in a long time.
